Puspen Dey

is one of the foremost Among the present generation of sarodists in India. He was initiated to sarod playing by Sri Atanu Rakshit, a senior disciple of Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra and thereafter he came under the tutelage of eminent sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta from whom he received extensive talim.

He obtained his Bachelor of Music (Sangeet Prabhakar) in Indian Classical Music (Instrumental) from the reputed ‘Prayag Sangeet Samity’ of Allahabad. He is an ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio & Doordarshan and has had the privilege of performing
in the prestigious ‘National Programme of Music’ of AIR in the year 2003.

The Musical Journey of Puspen

In Keeping with his Gharana (which was founded by Ustad Murad Ali Khan, his adopted son Abdulla Khan and Abdulla’s son, Ustad Md. Amir Khan), Puspen’s style of playing has evolved from a thorough blending of the ‘Rabab Ang’, ‘Dhrupad Ang’ and the ‘Veena Ang’ of the ‘Senia Gharana’.

Besides being a good performer, he has an outstanding acumen for teaching. He has had the excellence in conducting lecture demonstrations and workshops in various schools and Universities such as ‘Khairagarh Music University’ and ‘Maharshi Foundation’ in Bhopal. He had the rare honor of being invited as a visiting fellow to the ‘Indira Kala Sangeet Viswavidyalaya’ in Khairagarh in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India, a university exclusively devoted to music and fine arts and the only one of its kind in Asia.

Ustad Md. Amir Khan School of instrumental Music commemorated Radhika Mohon Maitra's 73 Birth anniversary at the Birla Academy on 13 March..........Radhika Mohon Maitra was a pope of Amir Khan Sahab. The scion of zamindar family in North Bengal when Bengal was undivided he had taken up the instrument as a hobby and later of his profession. He was one of the eminent musician in the country, but he will be best remembered as a dedicated and conscientious teacher who has left behind a sizable number of "shishyas" and "prashishyas" to carry on the tradition of his "gharana" and in whom he had implanted a respect for tradition and distaste for gimmikry. This was reflected even in the performances of newcomers Puspen Dey and Prasad Sen, young sarad and sitar players, who were careful to preserve the structure and melodiousness of the ragas of their choice

Surasagar Society organised musical concert in Sisir Mancha in memory of eminent vocalist of Delhi gharana late Chand Khan. Puspen Dey played raga Marwa comperatively a harder raga. He showed his mastership over alap and both the bilambit and drut gats. Tabla sangat was provided by Angsuva Banerjee.

Anirban concert: The fifth Anirban Memorial Concert was held at Lahabari by the Anirban Foundation......... Puspen Dey, a young sarodia, and veteran vocalist Amiyaranjan Banerjee were the participating artistes. Puspen Dey presented Raga Jog-alap jod and "gats" in Teental (madhyalaya and drut laya). Pushpen's systemetic alap and restrained "gatkary" were proof of the maturity he has gained since I heard him last. Abhijit Banerjee accompanied him on tabla.

A programme of instrumental music was presented by Theatre India at Gyan Manch..........The evening was brought to a close by Puspen Dey (Sarod). He played Raga Khamaj-alap, jod, jhala, followed by two gats in Dhamar and Teen tal. Tabla sangat was provided by Rup Chakraborty. These young performers are representative of a whole new generation of serious students of music, who are ready to accept the challenge of an uncertain future.
